Jaipuri Cotton Quilts for Early Winter: A Razai Buying Guide

Live Beautifully. Sleep Royally.

There is a week every October when the fan goes from full speed to number two, the AC remote disappears into a drawer, and someone at home says, “Raat ko thandak hone lagi hai.” Navratri (11–19 October 2026) brings late nights of garba and aarti, Diwali (8 November 2026) is a few weeks away, and by early November most of North and Central India is reaching for something warmer than a sheet.

That first layer of the season does not need to be a heavy, stuffed razai. For the gentle cold of October and November, a light Jaipuri cotton quilt is often the better choice: warm enough for cool nights, breathable enough that you do not wake up overheated, and beautiful enough to leave out on the bed all day. Here is how to choose one, with live prices from our store and Free shipping above ₹999 across India.

Why a cotton quilt is the right “first razai” of winter

Early winter in India is a season of in-betweens. Afternoons can still be warm, while the hours after midnight turn properly cool. A thick winter razai traps too much heat at this point, and a thin dohar may not feel like enough by 3 AM. A cotton quilt sits neatly in the middle.

  • Breathable warmth: cotton fabric and cotton filling let air move, so the quilt warms you without the sticky, stuffy feeling of synthetic fills.
  • Light to handle: easy to fold at the foot of the bed in the evening and pull up when the temperature drops.
  • Decor and comfort in one: a block-printed quilt works as a bedcover by day and a blanket by night.
  • Long season: use it on its own from mid-October, then layer it under a heavier blanket in peak December cold, and bring it back again in February.

How to choose your Jaipuri cotton quilt

1. Pick the right size first

Size decides comfort more than anything else. A double-bed quilt should hang a little over both sides of the mattress so it does not slide off when two people share it. Our double-bed cotton quilts measure 90×100 inches, generous enough for double and king beds. Our single-bed quilts measure 60×90 inches, ideal for a single bed, a diwan, a kid’s room or a guest who likes their own layer.

2. Choose the fabric feel

Mulmul is a fine, soft cotton weave that feels smooth on the skin and only grows softer with washing. If you sleep warm or use the AC on and off, a premium mulmul quilt is a lovely lightweight option. If you want a slightly cosier, classic razai feel for cooler nights, choose a mulmul quilt with pure cotton filling.

3. Consider reversible designs

Reversible quilts carry a different print on each side, so one quilt gives you two looks. Use the bolder side for festive weeks and the softer side for everyday calm, a small trick that makes the bedroom feel refreshed without buying anything new.

4. Match the print to the room

Warm reds, rust and earthy tones glow under diya light and suit festive bedrooms. Indigo and blue prints feel calm and cool, perfect for a bedroom you want to keep restful. White-ground block prints are the easiest to pair with any bedsheet you already own.

How to layer a quilt as the nights get colder

  • Mid to late October: a pure cotton bedsheet plus your cotton quilt folded at the foot of the bed. Pull it up after midnight.
  • November and Diwali week: use the quilt as your main cover. Add a soft dohar on top for the coldest hours if you need it.
  • December and January: keep the quilt as a breathable inner layer under your heavy winter blanket, so you get warmth without the weight pressing directly on you.

Caring for your cotton quilt

  • Air it before first use: unfold the quilt and air it for a few hours in shade so the cotton relaxes and fluffs up.
  • Wash gently: use a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent, or choose dry cleaning. Do not bleach.
  • Dry in shade: spread the quilt flat or over two lines so the filling dries evenly. Strong direct sun can fade printed colours over time.
  • Store it breathable: fold the quilt into a cotton bag rather than plastic, and add a few neem leaves or a cedar block to keep it fresh until next season.
  • Protect it between washes: a fresh bedsheet underneath and regular airing on dry days mean the quilt itself needs washing far less often.

Quick FAQ

Is a cotton quilt warm enough for Indian winters?

For October, November and mild winter nights, yes. In peak December–January cold in North India, use your cotton quilt as an inner layer under a heavier blanket for breathable, comfortable warmth.

What size cotton quilt do I need for a double or king bed?

Choose a 90×100 inch quilt for double, queen and king beds. For a single bed, diwan or kids’ bed, a 60×90 inch single quilt is the right fit.

What is the difference between a quilt and a dohar?

A dohar is a thin layered cotton sheet with no filling, best for warm or AC nights. A quilt has a soft cotton filling between layers, so it gives noticeably more warmth for cool October and November nights.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes, we offer Free shipping above ₹999. Every quilt in our collection is priced above that amount, so your quilt ships free.

The first cool night of the season is a small celebration of its own. Fold a Jaipuri cotton quilt at the foot of the bed, light a diya and let the festive season begin. Live Beautifully. Sleep Royally.
